The town of Kenai, Alaska is one of the most popular destinations for anglers seeking a true Alaskan fishing experience. The town itself lies on the Kenai Peninsula at the mouth of the Kenai River where it empties into the Cook Inlet. Its a short 30 minute plane ride from Anchorage or a 3 hour, 150 mile ride if you want to rent a car. It was one of the earliest Russian settlements in Alaska and still retains some of its original Russian influence while being surrounded by jaw-dropping scenery and abundant wildlife. There's always something to do with so much space and wilderness surrounding you.

Despite all the other adventure to be had during a vacation to Kenai though, you could not drag me away from the fishing. The town's location to both the world-famous Kenai River and the Cook Inlet allows anglers to go sea fishing for bottom-dwelling 300 pound halibut one day on the open ocean and the float fish the Kenai River for King Salmon the next. You can't beat the variety or size of the fish here.

The Kenai River itself is world-famous and the most popular spot for fishing in Alaska. The world record King Salmon was caught here in Soldotna, just up the road from Kenai, and it anglers consistently pull out large fish. Every year there are two runs of King, Silver, and Red Salmon and every other year there is a run of Pink Salmon.

Finding a fishing lodge before you go may be a daunting task. Make sure to book ahead and try to find a lodge that offers a package that suits the needs of your trip. To get you started, here's a few of the more popular lodges.

Beaver Creek cabins is located on Beaver Creek, very close to where Beaver Creek and the Kenai River meet. It is also close to the Beaver Creek Fishing Hole, a spot frequented by local guides. With your trip, you get access to dock space, freezer room, a telephone, a barbeque grill, a maid service, and fresh sheets. The price is a little bit lower than some other lodges, however, there is no package that includes guided fishing. A night here will cost between $55 and $85 a person and their king salmon guide service runs between $175 and $295 this price includes all of your sports fishing tackle. Prices depend on the time of year.

If you follow the Kenai River five miles from the heart of the town, you'll find The Alaskan Lodge.  During your stay, you get access to outdoor fire pits, wireless internet, picnic tables, and a fully equipped kitchen.  The lodge has a traditional bed and breakfast feel to it.  They don't offer any guide services themselves, but the kind people there will help you fill out your vacation by booking other charter services for you.  Because of this, your trip doesn't have to exclusively focus on fishing and can include other activities like whale watching, hunting, or mountain biking.

If you want a fishing trip but don't want to leave the comforts of town at home, the .406 Lodge may be for you. It's located close to the downtown area of Kenai and has easy access to shopping areas, restaurants, and several spots on the Kenai River to bank fish. It has 32 rooms that come with free local phone calls, cable TV, and internet. Freezer space is also available to store your catch.
